EXIF，最早是由JEIDA （Japan Electronic Industry Development Association 日本電子工業振興協會）所制訂的，全名為 EXchangeable Image File 的EXIF，最早在1995年10月由JEITA提出，而後於1997年11月推出EXIF 2.0版，最後在1998年6月推出EXIF 2.1升級版。當ISO（國際標準組織）要為DCF (Design rule for Camera File system)數位相機檔案系統制訂規章的時候，發現JEIDA還滿好用的，就直接引用修改成今日的EXIF 的模式。 EXIF 是數位相機在其儲存 JPEG 檔案的同時，所加入的一些資訊，目的是用來記錄攝影時的光圈、快門、ISO、日期等各種和攝影當時條件有關的訊息。簡單的說，這就有點像是傻瓜相機的日期打印一樣，只不過他所記錄的資訊更為詳盡和完備。
使用EXIF的JPEG檔，會在檔頭以下面的方式加入約2K的條件資訊：
0xFF+Marker Number(1 byte)+Data size(2 bytes)+Data(n bytes)
